The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their preseason with a 31–25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, showcasing a balanced attack and several roster hopefuls stepping into the spotlight.

Quarterbacks Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson each turned in strong performances, operating efficiently against a Jacksonville defense that frequently stacked the box with eight-man fronts.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith didn’t hesitate to take advantage, dialing up an aggressive passing game that spread the field. The result, four different players logged receptions of 20 yards or more, with two others pulling in catches of 19 yards apiece.

Shout out to Jags kicker Cam Little with the incredible 70-yard field goal that had the distance to go further.

Offensive Standouts

Lew Nichols led the team in rushing, carrying six times for 31 yards. His vision, balance, and power looked just like the flashes seen in Latrobe, a solid effort in his first preseason action.

Max Hurleman lived up to his “playmaker” label, making several nifty grabs, including a touchdown capped off by a Tyreek Hill-style flip in the end zone.

Kershaw Williams matched his camp form with a spectacular touchdown reception. His quick recovery from a sliding catch popping to his feet to add extra yards was equally impressive.

Defensive Highlights

Yahya Black made the most of his snaps, generating consistent pressure and winning several one-on-one battles. There is something special about this fifth round rookie out of Iowa.

Beanie Bishop, in his second year, continued his strong camp with multiple plays on the ball, including a well-timed pass breakup that drew praise from teammates.

Not every moment went Pittsburgh’s way. Kaleb Johnson’s fourth-and-one carry deep in Jaguars territory stalled the drive. The slow-developing play, coupled with poor blocking, left Johnson dropped for a loss a frustrating moment in an otherwise encouraging night.

Overall, it was a promising start for a Steelers roster filled with competition. The offense thrived when Jacksonville tried to clamp down on the run, the defense showed flashes of disruption, and several roster long shots proved they belong in the conversation heading into Week 2 of the preseason.
