Pittsburgh, PA – The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2025 NFL Draft strategy focused on fortifying their defense and adding depth to key positions, especially after acquiring star wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a second-round pick. This trade addressed their need for a top-tier receiver, allowing them to concentrate on other areas during the draft.

The idea of passing on Shedeur Sanders would lead me to think that Pittsburgh feels comfortable with some sort of agreement with free agent and four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers. It’s all possible after the debacle of Kenny Pickett has left them a little gun shy. Another high-end quarterback prospects flop could lead to an internal round of changes in their staff.

Here’s a detailed look at each of their draft selections:

Round 1, Pick 21 – DT Derrick Harmon (Oregon)

Harmon is a 6’4″, 313-pound defensive tackle who began his college career at Michigan State before transferring to Oregon in 2024. At Oregon, he started all 14 games, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors. Known for his strength and agility, Harmon is expected to bolster the Steelers’ defensive line, especially with veteran Cameron Heyward in a contract year.

Round 3, Pick 91 – RB Kaleb Johnson (Iowa)

Johnson showcased his abilities at Iowa, demonstrating a combination of power and speed that made him a reliable option in the backfield. His addition provides depth behind Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, offering the Steelers a versatile running option.

Round 4, Pick 123 – OLB Jack Sawyer (Ohio State)

A key player in Ohio State’s 2024 national championship team, Sawyer stands at 6’4″ and weighs 260 pounds. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in both 2023 and 2024. Sawyer’s pass-rushing skills and versatility make him a valuable addition to the Steelers’ linebacker corps.

Round 5, Pick 164 – DT Yahya Black (Iowa)

Black had a standout 2023 season at Iowa, recording 51 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a safety. At 6’5″ and 292 pounds, he brings size and athleticism to the defensive line, providing depth and potential rotational play.

Round 6, Pick 185 – QB Will Howard (Ohio State)

Howard transferred from Kansas State to Ohio State for the 2024 season, leading the Buckeyes to a national championship and earning Offensive MVP honors in the title game. His experience and leadership qualities add depth to the quarterback position behind starter Kenny Pickett.

Round 7, Pick 229 – CB Donte Kent (Central Michigan)

Kent was a consistent performer at Central Michigan, appearing in 53 games and recording 234 tackles, 46 pass deflections, and two interceptions. His ball skills and tackling ability make him a promising prospect for the Steelers’ secondary.

Undrafted Free Agents (UDFAs)

The Steelers have a history of developing impactful undrafted players. This year, they signed several UDFAs, including:

WR Roc Taylor (Memphis)

FB D.J. Thomas-Jones (South Alabama)

S Sebastian Castro (Iowa)

K Ben Sauls (Pitt)

WR Ke’Shawn Williams (Indiana)

Additionally, they extended the rookie minicamp invites to players like EDGE Nate Matlack (Pitt), QB Seth Morgan (New Hampshire), and WR JaVaughn Byrd (NIU).

Overall, the Steelers’ 2025 draft class reflects a strategic focus on strengthening their defense and adding depth to key positions, setting the stage for a competitive season ahead. Quarterback and Aarron Rodgers potentially signing with the Steelers will still outweigh the draft bounty of their 2025 NFL Draft.
