Powell is one of the toughest defenders pound for pound. He originally began his collegiate career at Michigan State under Head Coach Mark Dantonio. Uncomfortable playing linebacker for the Spartans, he asked to be released from the program which Dantonio granted the move. Powell plays with a fearless abandon sacrificing his body to make a big (clean) hit on the ball carrier. Bo Pelini was the benefactor, acquiring the Warren, Ohio native. Powell is an undersized, instinctive and aware safety. He plays smart and takes good angles to the ball. Reacts quickly and is efficient out of his breaks in zone coverage. A bit of a tone setter with the way he plays. He has gravitated to fine tuning the forgotten art of tackling. Takes pride and securing the ball carrier and could provide solid special team’s role. Excels at and around the line of scrimmage and NFL Scouts will want to see his speed and agility quickness when draft rolls around.
